Short Course on Electromagnetic modelling:

We are all facing difficult time recently and we assure you that keeping the safety standards at the highest level during the Event is our priority. Alongside safety and comfortability of the MRW attendees, we also set ourselves a goal to ensure the best possible technical experience of the conferences and accompanying events. For that reason, to provide the attendees of the Short Course on Electromagnetic Modelling with the most fruitful outcome from the theoretical lectures and also, practical experience with the discussed methods and solvers, the formula of the short course is being changed. The Short Course on Electromagnetic Modelling is now being organised as a fully virtual event and being postponed to October 22nd. We believe this new formula will bring the attendees the most effective and satisfactory tutorial experience. The Short Course virtual event will be open with no registration fee.

Abstract:

The aim of the Short Course on electromagnetic modelling is to cover fundamental and practical issues of computer modelling with different numerical methods. The Short Course will present to its attendees an overview of modelling techniques. The focus will be given to two most popular discrete numerical methods: Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) and Finite Element Method (FEM), addressing fundamentals, advantages, and basic causes of errors. The theoretical lectures will be supported with hands-on sessions, delivering practical experience with two different electromagnetic solvers, QuickWave and InventSim, based on FDTD and FEM methods. Practical sessions will be focused on filters and antennas (including ultra-fast analysis of Body of Revolution problems, e.g. dual reflector antennas) design and analysis, with highlights concerned with other devices. The attendees will work with the solvers, preparing predefined simulation scenarios, running the simulation, exploring basic and advanced solvers’ capabilities, and interpreting simulation results. The Short Course will be summarised with successful practical and industrial user cases on application of electromagnetic modelling, dedicated to variety of research areas, starting from bio-medical research, through cosmic application, to effective filters’ optimisation and tuning.

Attendees of the Short Course will have a chance to further discuss different aspects of electromagnetic modelling with the presenters, who will be available throughout the conference.

After the Short Course, all attendees will be provided with a three-month trial licence of full-capability QuickWave software.

Attendees of the Short Course on EM modelling shall bring their own laptop for the hands-on sessions.

Prof. Adam Lamęcki – Associate Professor at the Department of Microwave and Antenna Engineering at Gdansk University of Technology and co-founder of a spin-off company EM Invent that develops an electromagnetic filed simulator InventSim.

Dr. Grzegorz Fotyga – Assistant Professor at the Department of Microwave and Antenna Engineering at Gdansk University of Technology.

Workshop no. 1 /Material and Impedance Measurement Techniques by MMAMA Project Partners and Stakeholders

H2020: Microwave Microscopy for Advanced and Efficient Materials Analysis and Production

During the Microwave and Radar week 2020 H2020 MMAMA project will organise a dedicated half-day workshop on microwave material and impedance measurement techniques. The MMAMA partners and stakeholders will share their project relevant results and discuss about up-to-date innovations in the area.

MMAMA project (Microwave Microscopy for Advanced and Efficient Materials Analysis and Production) which will offer a nanoscale characterization platform for the European manufacturers of coatings, photovoltaic cells, and semi-conductor circuits. Partners of the project will use a combination of scanning microwave microscopes, dielectric resonators, and simulation to measure the material and interface properties of complicated material systems and nano-structures. This project, launched on November 1, 2017, will last 3 years. It received a European funding of € 3.99 million, allocated by the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

Workshop abstract:

MMAMA Workshop presents recent developments in material and impedance measurement techniques. Following the introductory presentation of the MMAMA project, there are six talks from the MMAMA consortium enriched with two from collaborating research groups at the Warsaw University of Technology (WUT).

The first part of the Workshop is dedicated to nanoscale material characterterisation techniques, namely, Scanning Microwave Microscopy from METAS and hybrid techniques from the University of Lille, operating up to 110 GHz. A talk from the WUT Antenna and sub-THz Group presents quasi-optical methods extending into sub-THz frequency range. The first part terminates with a modelling talk from ETH Zurich, providing insight into the physics of nanoscale measurements.

The second part of the Workshop continues with modelling-based resonant methods of material characterisation, including dielectric resonators from QWED and Fabry-Perot Open Resonator from WUT. A Keysight talk shows how different form-factor VNAs are used and calibrated in conjunction with resonators, coaxial probes, and antennas. A summarising user’s perspective is provided by the talk from MateriaNova.

Workshop abstract:

During the workshop researchers from WUT will present a practical approach to analog and digital aspects of signal integrity in both analog and digital systems. Starting with a short lecture about typical design mistakes and then moving to a practical part presenting proper routing of transmission lines, focusing on the impedance discontinuity
and undesired crosstalks. Both measurements of analog parameters and their influence on the performance of high-speed digital links will be evaluated using custom test boards with different types of lines and layout mistakes. Advanced measurement devices will be used during Hands-On Labs scenario-based experiments that allow attendees to observe the real world effects. In addition, the basics of RF simulations in both market-leading software and freeware applications and explain the most common mistakes in RF simulations and how they affect the convergence between simulation and measurement results will be presented.

Time duration 2-2.5 hours.
